HJHS receives school supply donation
Hartselle Junior High School recently received a donation of over 2,000 pounds of school supplies.
Beth Rabb, HJHS librarian, applied for the grant through the Feed the Children program, a charity of Avery Office Supplies. The school was awarded with binders, dividers, nametags, labels and other items. A HJHS parent donated the funds to ship the supplies to the school. Rabb said that the supplies would be used to supplement students’ school supplies and help them be organized this fall.
Eleven of the HJHS Pace Setters volunteered at the school on Fri., June 5, to help move, unpack and sort the supplies. The Pace Setters are a group of 30 students selected based on their academic record, school attendance, essay and an interview. Rabb said she had asked for any of the Pace Setters who were free that day to help them unpack the supplies and was pleased that eleven students responded to help. She said that, in addition to representing the school at events, service is an integral part of the Pace Setters leadership team.
“We try to teach them to understand the purpose of volunteering,” she said. “It is not for the money. It is simply because it is the right thing to do.”
