Hartselle sets summer sports camps

Several sports camps will be held in Hartselle over the summer.

The Hartselle High School baseball team will host baseball camps beginning later this month. A camp for students ages 11 and up will be held Tues., May 26, and Wed., May 27. The camp for ages 10 and under is Mon., June 1, and Tues., June 2. Instruction will be given in various skills, including pitching and infielding. The camps will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. The cost is $60, and lunch is included.

Assistant baseball coach Jerry Childers said that these camps are a great way to prepare young athletes for varsity baseball.

“We teach them the fundamentals that they will need to improve their game before they get to us,” Childers said.

The HHS basketball program will hold camps for boys and girls at the high school, also beginning later this month.

The FUNdamental Camp for students entering grades one through nine will be held Thurs., May 28, through Sat., May 30, from 8 a.m. to noon. Campers will learn dribbling, shooting, passing and defense skills. The cost is $75 and will include free drinks and a T-shirt.

More advanced basketball camps will be held in June. On Mon., June 1, and Tues., June 2, from 8 a.m. to noon there will be a Sharp Shooter clinic for students entering grades four through nine. The clinic will help students gain an accurate, consistent shot. The cost is $40. The Advanced Skills workshop will be Wed., June 3, through Thurs., June 4. This camp will teach skills for students entering fourth through ninth grades who would like to take their game to the next level. The camp will be from 8 a.m. to noon each day, and the cost is $40.

Students can register for the basketball camps online, or they can register on the first day of camp by arriving at 7:30 a.m. For more information, contact Coach Faron Key at 256-486-1948.

The HHS softball team will not host a camp this summer. Coach Christy Ferguson said that the program is considering holding the camps every other year.
