Brewer wins state auto skills championship

Brewer High School came out on top of the twenty high school automotive teams competing in the state finals of the Ford/ AAA Student Auto Skills competition Tues., April 14.

Will Dudley and Jacob Daugherty are now eligible to advance to the national finals and represent Alabama at the Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. Each two-person team also competed for scholarships in the automotive industry during the competition.

The competition took place in the parking area of the Barber Motorsports Park Museum in Birmingham.

Teams raced the clock to correctly identify and fix intentionally installed “bugs” on identical 2015 Ford vehicles. After properly diagnosing and repairing their vehicle, the teammates drove their assigned vehicle across the finish line, where the car was inspected for accuracy and workmanship.

Dudley and Daugherty said they were excited about their success after the weeks of intense practice sessions at night and on the weekends. They were chosen based on their high scores in an online qualifying exam that tested their automotive knowledge.
