Hartselle artwork featured on calendar cover

A Hartselle girl will have her artwork featured on the cover of the American Kidney Fund’s 2016 calendar, and be honored at the annual gala The Hope Affair in Washington, D.C. Sept. 30.

Kaylee Clabough, 8, won the AKF’s 20th annual art contest for pediatric kidney patients. Children from around the United States submitted artwork in January and February. The 13 finalists’ artwork were published on the organization’s website, and a winner was chosen from a public vote. Clabough’s drawing, “The Life Saver,” was the winner with more than 500 votes.

She was treated for hemolytic-uremic syndrome over the past year that caused her to suffer acute kidney injury. She was on dialysis over the summer and underwent seven months of intravenous drug therapy, but she is in better health currently.

Clabough’s winning drawing depicts her outlook on life. It is a self-portrait that depicts a smiling girl with an intravenous bag hooked up to her arm, surrounded by words such as “love,” “joy” and “health.” She said she drew her inspiration from thinking of all the things she was thankful for while getting her IV treatment.
