Funeral for Charles Edward Smith, 82, of Hartselle will be Sun., March 1, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Robert Sparkman, Harold Thompson and Jimmy Bassham officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery. Visitation will be Sun., March 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church.

Mr. Smith died Thur., Feb. 26, 2015, at Decatur Morgan Hospital. He was born July 7, 1932, in Hartselle to Arthur Jackson Smith and Jamie Peck Smith. He graduated from Morgan County High School and attended Florence State Teacher’s College and Auburn University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Smith worked at Monsanto, formerly Chemstrand, for 38 years, as a Human Resource supervisor, until his retirement in 1992. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church where he served on various committees and boards. He was married to his wife, Mary Nell Groover Smith for 59 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Virgina Smith Carroll, Arthur Jackson “Buddy” Smith, Jr., Hal Peck Smith and Hugh Dwayne Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Nell Smith of Hartselle; a son, Charles Gordon Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Merry Elizabeth “Beth” McHugh (Tom) of Hartselle; three grandchildren, Morgan Elizabeth McHugh, Abby Katherine McHugh and Charles Graham McHugh.

Pallbearers will be Paul Wallace, Graham McHugh, Keith Harper, Jim Smith, Kenny Smith and Jim Peck.

In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorial donations be made to First Methodist Hope House or Good Samaritan Fund.
