SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW: PHS girls soccer boast biggest roster ever

The Priceville High School girls soccer has more club players on its roster than ever before.

Head coach John Paulin said he can tell that the program is growing.

“We don’t have a middle school team, so I pulled up four girls from the junior high to play varsity,” Paulin said. “We had enough girls try out that we had to make cuts, which doesn’t always happen. Hopefully the junior high players we have can do a little recruiting in their grades and we can eventually have a JV or junior high team.”

Last year’s team lost to Guntersville in the first round of playoffs. The team has plenty of experience returning with juniors making up about half the. They also have two seniors coming back this year.

Paulin said he has several offensive returners, including big scorers.

“Jill Paulin and Averi DuPont scored about 20 goals each last year, and we are glad to have them starting again on offense,” Paulin said. “We also have Alison Varner returning on defense. She does a good job, and she played on a state championship club team.”

They will face Danville and Westminster Christian in area play this season after the restructure.

“Our chances have definitely improved since there are less teams in our area,” Paulin said. “It’s been a long time since we have played Westminster, so I don’t know what their team will look like this year. I’m not going to say we will definitely make playoffs this season, but I definitely will be disappointed if we don’t.”
