SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW: FHS softball returns wealth of experience

Falkville’s softball team went from having little or no varsity experience in 2014 to having a wealth of experience returning for the 2015 campaign.

Head coach Garry Pressley is hoping that experience will pay off with a return trip to the AHSAA State Tournament at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park.

“Last year, we had most freshmen and sophomores,” Pressley said. “This year, that’s changed to mostly upperclassmen – juniors and seniors. This is the third year that they’ve been in my system. Everyone knows what is expected of them.”

Blue Devils pitching coach Meaghan Gray will have five pitchers to use this season. Callie Garner is the top returning pitcher, along with Maddie White Kaitlyn McMurray, Paige Garner and Mackenzie Smith.

“Meaghan is doing a great job with the pitchers,” Pressley said. “Our success will rely on our pitching.”

Falkville returns most of its batting order in tact, including leading hitter Cheyenne Wilson.

“I want all of our batters to hit the ball – one through nine,” Pressley said. “That means that a pitcher can’t relax at any point in our lineup. If they do, I us to make them pay for it.”

Pressley said one of the main keys to success will be keeping his thin roster of 13 healthy.

“We have to stay healthy to have any kind of chance,” Pressley said.
