Hartselle man found guilty in murder case
A Morgan County jury delivered a verdict of guilty against Ezekiel Gholston, 23, of Hartselle in the slaying of two Krystal employees in Decatur on Aug. 24, 2011, after deliberating for five hours Tuesday.
Gholston was charged with three counts of capital murder but the jury found him guilty of two counts of felony murder, a crime punishable with a minimum of 20 years to life in prison.
“We’re disappointed in the verdict,” said Morgan County District Attorney Scott Anderson. “We believed we had the evidence for a capital murder conviction. However, the jury looked at the facts and determined he was guilty of two lesser changes. We respect the jury and accept their decision.”
Anderson said sentencing of Gholston would take place in Circuit Judge Glenn Thompson’s courtroom on May 6.
