A look back at deer hunting

Different types of deer hunting have been in season in various parts of Alabama recently. Hunting of antlered bucks by stalk or dog hunting ended on January 15 in Zone A as defined by the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources and ends this coming Sunday in Zone B. Antlered buck stalk hunting only (no dogs) ends this Saturday in Zone A and on February 10 in Zone B. Unantlered deer hunting ends this Saturday in Zone A and on February 10 in Zone B. Unantlered deer hunting on public land came to an end on New Year’s Day. Bow and arrow and spear hunting ends this Saturday in Zone A and on February 10 in Zone B.

The deer hunter who also is a book collector might be interested in one of more of the following rare classics dealing with hunting for game—deer but also other varieties. They also concern accidents that may occur during a hunting outing.

Here is a vintage recollection related to deer-hunting in this area:

Nov. 5, 1933–Hunters, rich and poor, good and bad, will soon assemble in the national forest for the fifth annual deer hunt sponsored by the state. From a little band of 63 does and a few bucks, planted in the forest years ago, the herd has increased to more than 1,500 and for four days, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, all bucks coming in range of hunters’ guns will be fair game. The hunt is sponsored by Commissioner Quinn of the Game and Fisheries Department. Hunting parties, after receiving their permit, may enter the forest either at Moulton or Haleyville.
