A look back at veterans
Although Veterans Day for 2014 is now past, it is always the right time to honor those who have served honorably in the armed forces of the United States.
Nov. 28, 1917–Richard A. Burleson and James W. Doss have been commissioned as officers in the U.S. Army.
Nov. 23, 1918–The latest World War casualty list shows that Jesse Bane of Hartselle has suffered battlefield wounds. A Purple Heart recipient, Sgt. Bane is expected to recover from the wounds he has sustained.
Dec. 2, 1928–William T. Miller of Hartselle is one of 69 men who volunteered for the military through the United States Army recruiting service for Alabama, with headquarters in Birmingham.
Nov. 10, 1931–Garland Stewart succumbed to cancer today at Veterans Hospital in Chicago. Mr. Stewart was a veteran of the World War. He was the son of prominent Hartselle merchant S. E. Stewart. His brother, William, was at his side when the end came.
Dec. 5, 1940–Harvey Leldon Johnson, age 28, of Hartselle, was one of the first two men to volunteer for induction in the peacetime selective service system. He will leave Friday morning for Fort McClellan at Anniston to begin a year’s training.
Dec. 19, 1940–Rudolph Smith, of Maxwell Field in Montgomery will spend Christmas with his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Frank T. Smith.
Dec. 17, 1941–Pvt. Charles Oden is now stationed at Camp Crouder, Mo.
Dec. 8, 1942–Lt. William H. Block, M.D., is now posted with the U.S. Army in New Orleans.
Jan. 5, 1944–R. Q. Rollins graduated today from the U.S. Army Air Corps Advanced Training Field at Randolph Field, Texas, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Lt. Rollins formerly was a teacher and coach at Morgan County High School.
Jan. 6, 1944–Reported as missing in the fall of Java two years ago, Capt. “Ike” Parker, former star quarterback and alternate football captain at Auburn, has only last week been heard from. He is in a Japanese internment camp at Moulmein No. 5, Burma. Capt. Parker is a former high school football coach at MCHS for the year 1937-38.
Dec. 7, 1944–Petty Officer J. C. Pettey is now stationed at Camp Parks, Calif.
Dec. 21,1944–Mrs. Ed Summers recently attended graduation exercises at Selman Field, La., where her son, Edward Summers, received his wings and commission as a U.S. Army Air Corps navigator.
Nov. 15, 1945–Capt. Buddy Rodgers left Tuesday for San Antonio, Tex., where he will be given an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army Air Corps. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Rodgers of Hartselle.
Dec. 20, 1945–Arthur Bean of the U.S. Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben F. Bean, recently arrived in San Francisco, Calif., from Japan following active duty. He is expected home for the holidays.
Dec. 12, 1946–Ralph Slate of the U.S. Signal Corps was at home on furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard E. Slate, on Hartselle Route 4 recently. He is now en route to the west coast where he will sail soon to the Pacific islands.
Dec. 15, 1949–Hartselle native Ferrell A. Rollins has been honorably discharged from the Navy and is now in the cattle business.
Oct. 29, 1953–Pfc. Bobby Jones, who is connected with the TV section of the U.S. Signal Corps, is currently stationed at Camp Gordon, Ga. (The late Bob Jones was the chief news anchor at Birmingham’s Channel 13 after his discharge from the military.)
Nov. 23, 1956–Sgt. Charles Quinn, stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C., is expected home soon for the Thanksgiving holidays.
Nov. 12, 1959–David Buckalew is now a private in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C.
