Pedestrian struck by police vehicle

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a Hartselle Police car on Sparkman Street this evening.

The incident occurred at 4:53 p.m. just south of the Hickory Street intersection near the farmer’s market. Additional Hartselle Police Department personnel and Hartselle Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.

The victim was identified by State Troopers as William Anderson, 71, of Cullman. Troopers said he was crossing Sparkman from east to west and the police car, driven by Lt. James Holladay, was traveling south.

The victim was transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital by ambulance before being transferred to Huntsville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Holladay was not injured, according to Hartselle Police Chief Ron Puckett.

“He was driving at a normal speed, not responding to an emergency or anything like that,” Puckett stated. “He may choose to take a few days off because he was badly shook up.”

State troopers are continuing their investigation.
