New SCV chapter plans charter meet
A group of Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) will meet for a charter signing Thur., Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Woodall Bridge skirmish marker on Hwy. 36, West, in Hartselle.
The public is invited and any male who is the descendant of a Confederate War veteran is welcomed as a prospective member.
“We will be Woodall Bridge Chapter #296 and organize with 13 charter members,” said Roger Hill of Hartselle who is serving as chapter adjutant. “State SCV Commander Gary Carlyle of Hennegar will perform the signing ceremony.”
“I’ll be there in uniform complete with saber and sidearm,” Hill added, “and I encourage others to do the same. Women are encouraged to wear period dresses from that era as well.”
Hill said he has been a member of other SCV chapters in the Decatur area for about 16 years and is excited about getting a chapter started in Hartselle.
He said Hartselle had a SCV chapter called the Morgan Camp back in the 1930s.
“Our meetings will be on the first Thursday of every month,” he pointed out, “and one of the projects we’ll have is to locate Confederate veteran grave sites in Morgan County and place a Confederate flag on each one.”
