Sex offender’s verification roundup conducted last week

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office conducted a sex offender verification roundup throughout the county last week with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies.

Sheriff Ana Franklin reported in a news release that 247 compliance checks were made. Of 174 targets, 150 were verified and 18 were found to be non-compliant. The roundup resulted in two arrests, one for a SORNA violation and the other for multiple warrants.

The residential verifications were conducted to ensure the public that Morgan County convicted sexual offenders were in compliance with the law. The process included verifying residency and employment and administrative requirements.

Before the roundup, the special victim’s unit had made 18 arrests for SORNA (Sex Offender Registration and Community Act) arrests for violations. The Morgan County Jail is also housing several offenders who were arrested by other agencies in the county.

The main focus of the operation was to ensure that those offenders prohibited were not living with children and were in compliance for the public’s safety, Franklin stated. She added that warrants will be obtained and investigations begun on those who were not in compliance.
