Danville FFA wins awards at national convention

Members of the Danville FFA Chapter were among team members participating in the National FFA Livestock Evaluation and Horse Evaluation Career Development Events (CDE).

The events were held recently in conjunction with the 85th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.

The livestock evaluation team, led by advisor Sandy Fields, was awarded a Silver emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 174 other participants. Quinn Roberts received a Silver emblem, Erin Turner received a Silver emblem, Jordan Turney received a Bronze emblem, and Zach Daniel received a Silver emblem.

The top ten individuals and the national winning team members received cash awards to recognize their success in the event. The cash awards and the livestock evaluation event are sponsored by Bayer Animal Health, SureChamp, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc. and Kent Nutrition Group.

The National FFA Livestock CDE is a competitive event that tests the student’s ability to select and evaluate livestock. Event components include eight evaluation classes of beef, sheep, swine, and goats; oral placement reasons on four classes; and a written exam on livestock production. A team activity, utilizing reproductive and marketing information, demonstrates the teams’ livestock selection ability. Each team in the event competed at local and state levels for the privilege of representing its state at the National FFA Convention & Expo.

The horse evaluation team was awarded a Bronze emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 174 other participants. Jesse Turner received a Silver emblem, Kourtney Lindsey received a Bronze emblem, Karrah Rylee Gillies received a Gold emblem, and Garrett Smith received a Silver emblem.

The top ten individuals and the national winning team members received cash awards to recognize their success in the event. The cash awards and the event are sponsored by RAM Trucks, Tractor Supply Company and Wahl Clipper Corporation as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

The National FFA Horse Evaluation CDE is a competitive event that tests the student’s ability to select and evaluate horses. Event components include eight selection classes that consisted of four halter classes and four performance classes. Students also give four sets of oral reasons with two sets coming from each evaluation class. Teams also work together to complete practical activities and a team presentation. Each team competed at local and state levels for the privilege of representing its state at the National FFA Convention & Expo.
