First Baptist sponsors Swamp John’s dinner

Garden salad

8 cauliflower florets

1 tomato

1/3 cup chopped cabbage

1 tsp. chopped onion

6 spinach leaves

Arrange spinach leaves on a plate, cut tomato into eighths lengthwise, add cauliflower. Top with the onion and chopped cabbage. Serve with dressing.

Fried green tomatoes

2 or 3 green tomatoes

1 cup meal or flour

Cooking oil

Slice tomatoes and batter them in meal or flour. Cook them in a little cooking oil on both sides until they are done. You can fry cucumbers as well.

Pimento dip

1 small jar pimentos, drain

1 cup sour cream

Combine with sour cream and stir until well blended. Serve with crackers.

Lemon butter sauce

1/4 cup butter

2 tablespoons lemon or orange juice

Melt butter and add lemon juice. Mix well.

Food hint: Meals may be inadequate if you do not have some knowledge of carefully planning balanced meals.

Fruit punch

2 cups sugar

2 qts. water

sliced lemons

juice from 2 lemons

1 cinnamon stick

1/2 tsp. cloves

1 qt. grape or cranberry juice

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water with a lemon rind, cinnamon and cloves. Boil for 5 minutes. Add other ingredients and can serve hot or cold.

Tips for taking care of a cat: Never let them outside because they could be run over by a vehicle. Keep them in a nice, cool place with a bed so they can take naps. Keep a bowl of cool water for them. Give them treats that are made especially for cats. Give them plenty of toys to play with and play with them. If you leave them alone, always lave the TV on-they do like to watch it.

Yogurt fruit pie

1/2 cup orange juice

1 packet unflavored gelatin

8 oz. cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup powdered sugar

8 ozs. plain yogurt

1 graham cracker pie crust

1/2 cups sliced fruit, mixed

Measure orange juice into a measuring cup. Sprinkle gelatin over the juice and let soften for 1 minute. Microwave on high until gelatin completely dissolves. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, yogurt and powdered sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Beat in gelatin mixture, beating until mixture is light and bubbly. Pour into crust. Chill until firm, about 4 hours. To serve, arrange fruit pieces over pie.

Cooking tip: Always use china or class bowls whenever you are mixing salads instead of using metal bowls.

Apple banana delight

4 bananas

2 cups unsweetened apple juice

5 tablespoons cornstarch

In a blender, blend 2 bananas and apple juice. Add cornstarch and mix until well blended. Cook over medium heat until thickened, stirring constantly. Arrange 2 sliced bananas in the bottom of a serving dish. Pour hot mixture over bananas. Chill until set.

Banana cream pie

8 oz. cream cheese

1 cup powdered sugar

1 lg. container cool whip

2 or 3 bananas, sliced

1 graham cracker pie crust

Mix first 3 ingredients and beat until smooth. Add bananas, mixing with a spoon. Put into pie shell. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

Strawberry delight

1 container fresh strawberries

1 pkg. cream cheese

Soften cream cheese, cut each strawberry into half. Arrange on serving dish. Fill each half with cream cheese.

First Baptist Church, located at 305 E Main Street, Falkville, will sponsor a Swamp John’s dinner, Friday, August 24. Serving time at the church will be 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Tickets are $10. Fish, shrimp and chicken will be served. Proceeds will go to WMU mission projects. For tickets or information, call 256-784-5827.

Strawberry tea sandwiches

1 cup fresh strawberries

1 pkg. cream cheese, softened

6 – 8 slices, bread

Mash strawberries and add to cream cheese, mix well. Cut crust from bread and spread strawberry spread onto the bread.
