AARP holds June meeting

AARP Chapter #1831 met recently at the Wedding Chapel for its June meeting.

President Patricia Moody called the meeting to order and led in the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag. Ten members were present.

Marsha Burchfield, a representative of Volunteer Services, presented the program.

She solicited volunteers to be mentors for students 13 to 18 years of age.

The Volunteer Services program matches volunteers with students who are either struggling with schoolwork or struggling with problems at home. Volunteers commit to spending four hours per month with the student during school hours and three hours per month after school and on weekends.

Burchfield distributed brochures to members.

During a business session, minutes from the previous meeting were read by secretary Frieda Betterton and approved after some corrections were made.

Treasurer Martin Conley gave the treasurer’s report and Ms. Moody gave a report on a meeting she attended and distributed information leaflets.

Conley won the fundraiser cake, which was provided by Sarah Plemons.

A birthday greeting was extended to Laverne Sacks.
