Thompson gets opposition in council race

One late qualifier Tuesday afternoon has now given opposition to every Hartselle council position for the Aug. 28 municipal election.

Former councilman Bill Drake was the final council qualifier of the day and will challenge incumbent Kenny “K.T.” Thompson for Place 1.

Qualifying for the election ended at 5 p.m. today.

Richard “Dick” Carter entered the race for Place 4 earlier in the day to face incumbent Tom Chappell.

The most competition for any council position was for Place 3. Mark Mizell chose not to run again for that position because he is moving out of Hartselle.

The four candidates vying for Place 3 are George Hearring, Glenn McGann, Karen Owens and Mike Roberson, who qualified on Monday.

Incumbent Bill Smelser will take on A.D. Hargrove for Council, Place 2 while Jason E. Armstrong, Kenneth “Ken” Doss and Franklin Delano Turney are running for vacant position Place 5.

The mayor’s race hasn’t changed since the early in the qualifying period. Current Place 5 Councilman Donald E. “Don” Hall will face Lee E. Hartsell and Johnnie J. Howell.
