Six Hartselle residents qualified for the offices of mayor and city council as of Thursday morning.

Don Hall and Johnnie Howell have both already qualified for the mayor’s post. Lee Hartsell, who has announced that he will run for mayor, didn’t qualify in the first day.

These three are vying for the position that is being vacated by Dwight Tankersley, who said he wouldn’t seek a third term as mayor.

Four of the five council positions had candidates qualify for those posts in the first day. Council President Kenny Thompson, who serves as the Place 1 representative, qualified for re-election. Place 4 incumbent Tom Chappell also qualified for re-election.

George Hearring qualified early Thursday morning as a candidate for Place 3 on the city council, The position is currently held by Mark Mizell who previously indicated he and his family are moving outside of the city after his current term expires.

Jason Armstrong was the first person to file qualifying papers with City Clerk/Controller Rita Lee. He made a bid for election to Place 5 on the City Council shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

Council Place 2 incumbent Bill Smelser announced that he would seek another term. However, he has yet to qualify as of early Thursday morning.

Each candidate is required to fill out four forms as follows: Statement of Candidacy, Statement of Economic Interest, Appointment of Principal Campaign Committee and Campaign Finance Contribution and Expense. In addition, a $50 qualifying fee is required of each candidate.
