Petition names verified
Enough names on a petition calling for a referendum on legalizing alcohol sales in Hartselle were verified to put the issue before the city’s voters on Nov. 6.
City Clerk Rita Lee said she and four others were able to verify at least 717 of the signatures, which is the minimum number of voters required to call for a vote. More than 2,600 signatures were on the petition.
While the election will be held on the same date as the general election, Hartselle voters must use a separate ballot to vote on the wet-dry referendum.
Voters turned down the option to legalize alcoholic beverages two years ago 3,158-2,691, 467-vote margin of victory. By state law, petitioners could not have another referendum on this issue until the 2012 General Election.
