James ‘Shortie’ Bates

Funeral for James “Shortie” Bates, 82, of Hartselle will be Wed., March 28, at 4 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Fanning officiating.

Visitation will be Tue., March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral Home.

Burial will be in Hartselle Memory Gardens.

Mr. Bates died Sun., March 25, 2012, at his residence. He was born Oct. 3, 1929, in Morgan County to Walker Bates and Myrtle Jones Bates. He started working for Ray Childs Construction at the age of 17 and worked for the company for many years. He and a friend, Leon Asherbranner, owned and operated a construction company and after it closed he worked in the maintenance Department at Summerford Nursing Home until his retirement in 2010. He coached Dixie Girls Softball teams from 1971 until 1997. He coached many players and he loved them all.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Anne Bates of Hartselle; two sons, Hoyt Asherbranner and wife Mildred of Falkville ad John Asherbranner of wife Lori of Falkville; three daughters, Barbara Bates of Hartselle, Peggy Bowen and husband Richard and Lisa Light and husband Terry, all of Falkville; two sisters, Louise South of Falkville and Marie MaCay of Hartselle; and six grandchildren, Tonya, Jeremy, William, Travis, Hunter and Josie.

Pallbearers will be Robert Summerford, Alan Summerford, Ryan Summerford, Hoyt Asherbranner, Jeremy Asherbranner and John Asherbranner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Leon Asherbranner, Jason Terry, Donald Locke and Jose Sanchez.
