Hartselle man charged with stealing from neighbor
A Hartselle man is in jail after being accused of with the burglarizing his neighbor’s home.
On Tuesday, a resident came home to find his window air conditioner missing from his window. The victim allegedly saw his air conditioner sitting partially disassembled in his neighbor’s yard and then called the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department.
The victim also reported that he was missing a laptop computer, stereo receiver and two speakers.
The sheriff’s investigator determined that the suspect entered the residence through the back door. Police began to question the woman who lived next door, who initially stated that she had “no idea” how the air conditioner unit got from their neighbor’s window to their front yard, according to a press release.
The investigator found out that the victim only stayed at that residence occasionally, and in fact hadn’t been there since March 3. Authorities also found out that the man of the house next door had been in jail for unrelated charges since the March 12.
The suspect, Shawn Davis Caudill, 25, of 787 Highway 36 East in Hartselle was interviewed at the Morgan County Jail. He was subsequently charged with burglary in the third degree, and a bond was set at $2,500. He remains in jail on a probation violation charge, which has no bond.
Caudill told the investigator that he was assist in locating and returning the rest of the victim’s property.
