Lady Tigers fall twice in Hoover Tourney

What was shaping up as a dominating season for Hartselle’s High School’s No. 1 ranked girl’s softball team came to a sudden halt on Friday night at the Hoover Tournament.

The Lady Tigers tasted defeat for the first time in 11 games to Alabama Christian Academy and lost again on Saturday to Hewitt-Trussville.

“”We lost to both teams by a single run,” said head coach Robin Riley. “It was errors that cost us the game against ACA and strong hitting that made the difference in Hewitt-Trussville’s favor on Saturday,

Still, the Lady Tigers prevailed in three of the five games they played and improved their overall record to 14-2.

Hartselle 3, Oak Mountain 0

Hartselle out-hit Oak Mountain 10 to 2 to take a 3-0 win in their opening game Friday. Olivia Golden led the way with a homer and two singles. Ashley Boggs and Baylee Holt each had a double and single and Emily Nix, Jada Hayes and Sarah Ellen Battles each singled. Hayes was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits while striking out one batter and walking one.

ACA 5, Hartselle 4

The Lady Tigers lost to Alabama Christian Academy with five errors to their credit. Holt and Kayla Faulk each belted a pair of singles while Nix doubled and Golden singled. Faulk gave up five hits while striking out one batter and walking one.

HHS 5, Winfield 3

The Lady Tigers defeated Winfield 5-3 in Friday’s nightcap. Nix belted a home run, Faulk had a pair of singles and Boggs, Holt and Battles each singled. Hayes was credited with the win, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three batters and walking one.

HHS 2, Thompson 1

Hartselle edged Thompson 2-1. Holt homered, and Nix, Stephenson and Taylor Wascavage each singled. Faulk was the winning pitcher. She allowed four hits while striking out one batter and walking one.

Hewitt 8, HHS 7

Hartselle fell to Hewitt-Trussville by a single run on Saturday. Madaline Sittason belted a pair of singles, Golden had a double and Nix, Faulk and Battles each singled. Hayes pitched 2 1/2 innings and was tagged with the loss. She gave up seven hits while striking out one and issuing one base on balls. Faulk pitched five innings, allowed three hits while striking out one batter.

The team is off this week because of exams and this weekend because of the senior prom. The season will resume Mon., Mar. 26, against Lawrence County at home at 4:30 p.m.
