Lady Patriots defeat Cullman for area title

Brewer’s Lady Patriots (27-3) outscored Cullman’s Lady Bearcats 8-0 in overtime to capture the Class 5A, Area 13 championship by a score of 54-46 at Randolph Ryan Gym Saturday night.

The Bearcats (27-6) held a lead through three quarters of the hard-fought contest before the Lady Patriots gained control and put the game away. The scores were 13-10 after one quarter, 27-24 at halftime and 37-33 after three quarters, all in Cullman’s favor.

Brewer hit a lay-up and a free throw to go ahead for the first in the game with about five minute left to play. After that the lead changed hands three times before Savana Flack hit a 12-ft. jumper to tie the game 46-all, A contested lay-up by Riley Northway bounced off the rim with no time left in regulation and sent the gasme4 into overtime.

Northway put the game out of reach in O-T by hitting a 15-ft. jumper with 3:40 left and adding two free throws with 2:42 left.

The win advanced the Lady Patriots to a sub-regional match up with area runner-up Mortimer Jordan Thur., Feb. 16, at Randolph Ryan Gym. Cullman will face region champion Hayden on the road at the same time.

Brewer reached the area final by defeating West Point and Cullman advanced by defeating Hartselle 57-32.

“I knew coming in this would be a very competitive game,” said Brewer head coach Ricky Allen. “Both teams are very similar and it boiled down to which team worked hardest to win the little battles. I thought our girls did that.”

“And for them to play with the energy they had in the overtime, they had to reach down and find something they didn’t know they had,” he pointed out.

“The kind of fan support we had tonight and throughout the season means so much to these girls,” he said. “For that reason, I’m glad we’ll be hosting the sub-regional. It’ll give the fans another opportunity to come out and cheer on their team in another home game.”

Northway paced the Lady Patriots in scoring with 21 points, 14 of which came in the first half and seven in overtime. Courtney Oldacre followed with eight points, Malerie Drinkard and Flack each had seven points and Cheyenne McLemore had five.
