Grascals to appear at Princess Theatre
Decatur’s historic Princess Theatre will present the award-winning bluegrass band “The Grascals” in a tribute to the 50th anniversary of “The Andy Griffith Show” on Fri., Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m. The event is made possible by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment of the Arts and is part of the theatre’s Professional series.
The Grascals are among the most beloved and acclaimed bands on the bluegrass scene thanks to their appreciation for the mingling of bluegrass and country music. Vocally, the trio of Terry Eldridge, Jamie Johnson and Terry Smith feature vocals and soaring trios. As an instrumental unit, they have never sounded sharper, with mandolin ace Danny Roberts, fiddler Jeremy Abshire and banjo player Kristin Scott contributing their talents. In 2-010- The Grascals joined The Rowdy Friends Tour, traveling far and wide with Hank Williams Jr., playing before huge crowds.
Their CD “Dance ‘til Your Stockings Are Hot and Ravelin’” is a musical tribute to Andy Griffith and the music he used on the Andy Griffith Show. The band offers tracks like “Boil; Them Cabbage Down,” Old‘ Joe Clark” and the irrepressible “Mayberry’s Finest Theme.” The group was so caught up in the show that they recorded a brand new, original song, “Boy, Giraffes Are Selfish,” based on a favorite line from one of the Andy Griffith episodes.
The music featured on the Andy Griffith Show mirrored t he folksy, fun stories and characters of the iconic series. Thoughtful, sincere and with a dash of humor, their message always rooted itself in doing the right thing and upholding Mayberry’s small-town values.
“‘The Andy Griffith Show’ had a moral lesson that every human being should live by,” vocalist/guitarist Terry Eldridge stated. “It’s an honor and privilege to be associated with the best TV show ever made. It was—and still is—awesome family entertainment.
