UDC attends general convention

Joe Wheeler #291 UDC members attended General Convention in Texas bringing home enthusiasm, hats and jewelry. The rush is on as November finds us readying for the holidays.

Canned goods for Meals On Wheels and Christmas gifts for Tutt Fann Veterans Home have been delivered. Christmas cards to veterans have been mailed by Joe Wheeler #291 UDC. Money has been collected for the Elder Tree recipients.

Veterans Day was observed by participation in local Veteran’s Day Parades. Bettye Moore, Judy Blackwell, Linda Clemons, Mary Askenburg, and Faye McWhorter attended the Shoal Creek Baptist Veteran’s Day program. Bettye Moore arranged a display of 1861-1865 memorabilia for viewing. Faye McWhorter reported on the recent Valor Flight for Korean Veterans to Washington D.C. Linda Edwards served as a guardian on the recent flight. Faye and husband Roger have worked on several Honor Flights taking veterans from the Tennessee Valley to Washington D.C.

Laura Ritch and Glendora James traveled to Anniston for a meeting with the Major Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter 2632. Laura Ritch gave a program on Christmas During the War Years.

Deaths reported at our November meeting were: John Braswell, son of Ethel Braswell, deceased Honorary Life President of General and brother of Shirley Coleman, Aunt of Paula Hurst, brother of Judy Blackwell.

A letter from the Civil War Trust was read by Ginger Reeves, corresponding secretary for our donation of $100.00 toward saving a battle site located at Hogg Mountain near Cullman.

Anita Parham read the poem,” The Common Soldier.” Terri Dean was presented with another supplement.. Gay Gamble Neel was presented with her certificate of membership. Marguerette Mammarelli reported that she had located a letter from her uncle, Nathan Lemay dated 1910.

Rita Birdsong reported that a confederate marker has been received and will be dedicated in 2012.

Betty Lovvorn states Little Joe Wheeler #764 supports Joe Wheeler Home Restoration Project.

Members were encouraged to attend Christmas at Mt. Creek Dec. 3.
