Shady Grove Baptist plans ‘Heavenly Harvest’

Shady Grove Baptist Church will host a special celebration called “Heavenly Harvest” on Sun., Nov. 6, beginning at 4 p.m. The celebration will focus on the harvesting of shoebox gifts for needy children around the world and a harvest of canned goods for the “Day of Caring.” Activities will include: games, 4 to 6 p.m.; hayride, 4:30 p.m. and every 30 minutes thereafter; chili supper, 6 to 7 p.m.; outdoor movie, 7 p.m.; Christian karaoke, 4:30 to 6 p.m. A baked goods sale and popcorn and balloons will also be offered. Everyone is invited.

The following story about nature’s weather forecasters was taken from the 1961 Agricultural Almanac: If you want to know what the weather is going to be like, you can learn a lot by observing spiders in their webs.

If the terminating filaments of the web are long, you can expect a fair period to extend 10 to 12 days. Spiders are restless about their webs and they usually make a change every 24 hours. By camping out beside a spider’s web, and making hourly observations, you can learn a great deal. If the spider alters its web between 6 and 7 p.m., look for a fine night. If the alteration takes place in the morning, look for a good day. If the spider works during a rain, there will be a change for the better. And the busier the spider, the better the expectations. But if the spider breaks or destroys its web and heads away, you’d better make sure your umbrella has no holes in it. Well, I never thought of a spider as a weatherman, but who knows, it may just work.
