Stockings for soldiers

Quilting club donates Christmas stockings to Blue Star Mothers of Morgan County for holiday care packages

Soldiers from Morgan County will get a taste of home this holiday season.

The New Beginnings Quilt Guild donated 75 homemade stockings to the Blue Star Mothers of Morgan County, who will stuff them with goodies and send them to servicemen and servicewomen from Morgan County.

Connie Chamberlain, president of the guild, said this was one of their service projects to give back to the community.

“We did this last year, and we enjoyed helping them out,” Chamberlain said. “We felt we could do this to help again.”

Teresa Groves, president of Blue Star Mothers, said she was thrilled to receive so many stockings from the group. She said they will be stuffed with personal items, snacks and other items and be shipped to more than 50 soldiers from Morgan County.

“We’re very, very pleased to get these stockings,” Groves said. “We still need donations to help us continue to send care packages. And it’s expensive too.”

Groves said it takes as much as $700 just to cover the postage. She said that anyone interested in helping can log on to bluestarmothersofmorgancounty.com for more information. The group meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in East Highland Baptist Church.

New Beginnings Quilt Guild meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in First Christian Church.
