City to discuss alcohol sales in strategic plan

The Hartselle City Council will discuss whether to exclude the promotion of alcohol sales in the city’s strategic plan, which was developed during the Alabama Communities of Excellence meetings over the last nine months.

Before a large crowd at its Sept. 27 meeting, the council decided to table adoption of the plan. Councilman Bill Smelser made the motion to table the item, which was seconded by Councilman Don Hall. The vote passed 4-1 with Councilman Tom Chappell casting the dissenting vote.

When the strategic plan was submitted to the council, it included a recommendation to promote alcohol sales for retail economic development.

City Planner Jeremy Griffith asked the Planning Commission to submit revision comments by Monday. The council will then discuss the possible revisions on Monday at 7 p.m. in the City Hall auditorium.

Those revisions will then be shared with ACE representatives, who will then review the changes over the next two weeks. If all issues have been resolved, the plan will go back to the council for final consideration on Oct. 25.
