First-quarter TD gives Falkville first win

Falkville scored a touchdown in the first quarter and then hung on the rest of the game as they defeated Cold Springs 6-0 on the road to give Falkville its first win of the season.

The key play of the game came when Tyler Anders connected with Johnny Tompkins on a screen pass and Tompkins did the rest by going 80 yards for the touchdown. The extra point failed, but that would be all the Blue Devils needed.

“You never know when a 2-yard pass turns out to be the difference in the game,” said Falkville coach Brad Vest. “That’s what happened with us tonight.”

From there, neither team could do much. Both teams made numerous mistakes, as one might expect in a game between two winless teams. There were turnovers, penalties and goal line stands.

“We just hung on there at the end,” Vest said. “Our guys especially the younger ones are tickled to get this win, and hopefully it will be something we can build on.”

The Blue Devils will have a tall order next week when they host Fultondale, 54-13 winners over Westminster Christian.
