Tanner tames Falkville
FALKVILLE – Tanner’s Rattlers scored on their first possession and went on to put a 38-0 whipping on Falkville’s Blue Devils at Burl Vest Stadium Friday night.
The loss left the Blue Devils winless in two starts while the Rattlers upped their record to 2-0.
The Blue Devils made their best showing on offense the first time they had the ball when they moved 32 yards on nine plays and reached Tanner’s 38-yard line before they bogged down and were forced to punt. After that it was all downhill. They wound up losing 91 yards on 25 running plays.
On the other hand, their opponent thrived on big play opportunities, scoring all of its points in the first three periods and finishing with 250 yards of total offense.
“We made a lot of mistakes,” said Falkville head coach Brent Vest. “You can’t do that and have a chance of winning against a good team. Tanner has a lot of good athletes and is a well coached team.”
“While we didn’t handle things very well, especially in the second half, it’s still early in the season and we’ve got to get back to work,” he added.
The Rattlers grabbed a 7-0 lead with 3:23 left in the first quarter on a three-yard run by Trey Cosby.
Obed Sanchez added a 22-yard field goal with 318 left in the second quarter to make the score 10-0.
The Rattlers upped their lead to 17-0 on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Landon Stephens to Greg Maclin with 59 seconds left in the first half.
Cosby returned the second half kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to give Tanner a 24-0 advantage.
Three minutes later, the visitors scored again on a six-yard run by Cosby after Ketrick Thompson returned a Falkville punt 34 yards. Sanchez added the extra point to make the score 31-0.
The Rattlers closed out their scoring on a 38-yard punt return by Cosby with 6:48 left in the third period.
