Southerland is state award winner

Tim Southerland, technology coordinator for the Hartselle School District, was recently honored as the recipient of the 2009 Marbury Technology Innovation Award in the District Technology Coordinators category.
The award was presented by Dr. Joe Morton, state superintendent of education, at the Alabama Technology Conference at the University of Alabama in Birmingham last month.
Southerland, a 13-year veteran in his position, was recognized for “exceptional creativity, leadership and institutional excellence.
He was also recognized by Hartselle School Board members at their regular meeting recently and presented with a certificate of commendation from Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed.
“This is one of the highest awards the State Department of Educaton gives and it couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person,” Reed stated.
Nominees for the award are judged on five criteria: Innovation and Creativity, Impact on Teaching and Learning, Leadership, Teamwork, and Scholarship.
“Tim spends countless extra hours to ensure that our students and teachers have every technology opportunity that we can afford them,” said Dr. Nancy Horton, director of instruction for Hartselle City Schools. He strives to remain current in the latest educational materials and techniques and offers assistance for each of our ‘small’ and ‘large’ technology issues and questions, while maintaining a helpful, willing attitude.”
