Board adopts $2 student postage fee

The cost of mailing report cards, newsletters, attendance records and other pertinent student information to parents will be offset by a $2 yearly postage fee Hartselle High School students will begin paying next school year.
The fee was adopted by Hartselle School Board at its last regular meeting on a recommendation from Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed.
He said the fee was needed to offset rising mailing costs and ensure parents receive reports cards and other hard copy information about their childrens’ progress on a timely basis.
In another matter, the superintendent was authorized to  sign a three-year contract extension with Highground Solutions of Birmingham, the firm that provides the SchoolCast Rapid Alert and Notification System.
Reed reported the notification system has worked well when used to alert parents about an emergency situation in the school system.
“Within a 10-minute period we’ve been able to transmit messages to 3,500 phone users,” he said. “This is a much needed service and one that has received only positive feedback from parents.”
