Roan seeks reelection to license commission post
Morgan County License Commissioner Sue Baker Roan is seeking reelection.
A native of Morgan County, she was the first woman ever elected to public office in the county. She served 12 years on the Morgan County School Board, serving as vice president of the board during that time. She also served several years as the bailiff for Judge David Breland.
In 1994, Gov. Jim Folsom Jr. appointed her license commissioner and voters overwhelmingly elected her to the position in 1996. In 2002, she had no opposition and 98 percent of the county’s voters marked her name on the ballot.
Roan said she is proud of the positive changes she has brought to the License Commissioner’s Office. She said she goes out of her way to make purchases of licenses easy and pleasant and encourages all staff members to be pleasant as well.
She also said she worked hard to increase convenience to the customers, opening satellite offices in Hartselle and eastern Morgan County at the District Four Shop.
Roan graduated from Austinville High School and Anderson Business College. She worked for a number of years at AmSouth Bank and is a longtime member of Hartselle First Baptist Church. She’s been active for many years in Morgan County and state Democratic politics, serving on local and state committees.
She is a member of the Decatur Rotary Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Decatur Morgan County Chamber of Commerce and has served on the State Board for Diabetes, a disease which took her late husband. Twice a cancer survivor, she is active in Relay for Life activities, raising funds for cancer research and treatment.
Roan’s late husband was Bunyan Roan, a retiree from Wolverine Tube. They have two children, Bryan Roan and Bonnie Prestwood and four grandchildren.
She has received numerous public awards for her work, including a Humanitarian Award and the Outstanding Professional by the Girl Scouts of North Alabama in 2000. She was also selected the Best Boss of the Tennessee Valley in a Decatur Daily poll.
