All-Stars get back to action

By By Todd Thompson, Sports Editor
Three area seniors-to-be will get back to the game next week when the 12th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week opens in Huntsville Monday.
Hartselle softball player Audrey McClanahan and Brewer basketball player Morgan Crawley and soccer player Hannah Chunn will participate in the All-Star Sports Week, which includes in-state all-star games in volleyball, baseball, girls and boys basketball, softball, soccer and football.
The Sports Week will also feature clinics and special sessions for coaches, principals, athletic directors, cheerleader coaches and officials.
But the main focus will be on rising seniors who will compete against other top players from around the state.
McClanahan was one of Hartselle’s most productive hitters this season, finishing with a .405 batting average with 33 RBIs.
The senior-to-be had 70 hits as the Lady Tigers advanced to the Class 5A state championship game before falling to Mortimer Jordan.
A solid second baseman, McClanahan also proved to be a dangerous threat on the bases with 30 stolen bases. She scored 53 runs last season.
The softball all-star teams will play a doubleheader on Wednesday, July 16, at the Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex beginning at 6 p.m.
Crawley is coming off a breakthrough junior season for the Lady Patriots after averaging just over nine points per game.
A 55 percent shooter from the field, Crawley stepped up big down the stretch for Brewer when the Lady Patriots’ top scorer, Emily Dabbs, suffered a knee injury near the end of the season.
Crawley averaged 14 points per game for Brewer in the team’s final eight games.
The girls’ basketball all-star game will be played at 6 p.m. Thursday at the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Spragins Hall. The boys’ all-star game will follow at approximately 8 p.m.
Brewer’s Hannah Chunn will play in the girls’ soccer match Tuesday, July 15.
The two girls’ teams and two boys’ teams will square off in a doubleheader at John Hunt Park, beginning with the girls’ game at 5 p.m. The boys’ contest begins at 7 p.m.
