GULF SHORES - The Hartselle Lady Tigers won four games, lost two and tied one in competition at the Nike Gulf Shores Softball Classic last week.
They defeated Lincoln County, Tenn., tied West Morgan and won over Jemison in the conclusion of pool play Mar. 18 and defeated Pinson Valley and lost to Ardmore in tournament play on Mar. 19.
The wins improved the team’s record to 14-5-1 on the season.
Hartselle 6 Lincoln County, Tenn. 0
Kristy Pevahouse smashed a home run and a triple to lead a seven-hit attack for Hartselle. Chandler Orr had a pair of doubles, Sara Lang had a three-run homer and a single and Hayden Watts was credited with a single.
Breanna Riley was the winning pitcher. She allowed no runs on no hits and struck out seven. Meaghan Gray pitched the last two innings. She allowed no runs on one hit while walking one and striking out three.
Hartselle 0, West Morgan 0
In a pitcher’s duel, neither team was able to score and the game ended 0-0 when the game’s allotted time elapsed. Hartselle had four hits and West Morgan one. Pevahouse, Anna Beth Hall and Lang each had a single for Hartselle.
Riley pitched for Hartselle. She allowed one hit and walked one while striking out eight.
Hartselle 7, Jemison 1
In the final pool game, Hartselle collected seven hits to defeat Jemison. Pevahouse rapped a pair of singles, Lang and Michele Fields each doubled and Kimmie Minor, Paulsen and Ashley Boner each had a single.
Gray was the winning pitcher. She gave up no runs on no hits, walked none and struck out three in three innings of work. Brittney Kerr pitched two innings in relief. She gave up a run on two hits, walked one and struck out three.
Hartselle 6, Pinson Valley 1
Hartselle collected five hits to post their 14th win of the season Watts was credited with a double and single, Audrey McClanahan doubled and Orr and Paulsen each singled.
Gray was the winning pitcher. She allowed one run on four hits, walked none and struck out six.
Ardmore 2, Hartselle 1
Ardmore got revenge on Hartselle for an earlier loss as they came out on top in a 2-1 pitcher’s battle. The Lady Tigers were held to just three hits, a double by Watts and a single each by McClanahan and Lang. They scored their only run in the second inning on a walk by Kelsey Starr and Watts’ double. Ardmore scored both of its runs in the first inning.
Riley was the losing pitcher. She gave up two runs on four hits, didn’t allow a walk and struck out six.
Regular season
Sparkman 2, Hartselle 1
Hartselle’s Lady Tigers led early and were tied with Sparkman: at 1-1 until the top of the seventh inning when they gave up a run and went on to lose a hard-fought battle with the visiting Lady Senators by a score of 2-1.
The Lady Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on the strength of an infield single by Audrey McClanahan and a line- drive double to left field by Sara Lang. McClanahan also had her teams’ only other hit, a single to left field.
Sparkman ‘s Ashlee Handley belted a solo home run in the fifth inning to tie the score at 1-1. The winning run was scored in the top of the seventh by Amber Torres. She doubled to start the inning, advanced to third on a bunt single and scored on a sacrifice fly.
Breanna Riley was the losing pitcher. She gave up two runs on four hits and struck out five.
Torres was credited with the in. She allowed one run on three hits while striking out nine.
GH Hartselle dropped to 15-6 on the season with the loss. Sparkman, the No. 1 ranked Class 6A team in the state, picked up its 23rd win against only two losses.
