AARP offering free help with income taxes
There’s nothing too good about filing taxes, but the process should go a little better this year thanks to a free service provided by AARP.
Free tax preparation and counseling for tax payers with low to middle income, with special attention to those 60 years and older, is available through the AARP’s Tax-Aide volunteers on Tuesday and Wednesdays from Feb. 5-April 15. Individuals do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this free service.
The service is provided at the Morgan County Baptist Association in Hartselle. Tax-Aid volunteers, trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, will offer help with personal income tax returns and offer both electronic filing and direct deposit for both federal and state refunds.
Taxpayers should call the center at 773-5243 to schedule an appointment. They should bring any tax documents they have received, such as W-2s, 1099R, pension and IRA distribution forms and any interest and dividend reports. A copy of 2006 tax returns, photo identification and Social Security card are also required.
