A record $40.9 million operating budget, including a 5 percent cost of living pay increase for all county employees, has received the OK of the Morgan County Commission.
"This budget reflects the impact a steady increase in revenues during the 2006-07 fiscal year has had on our current financial condition and future outlook," Commission Chairman John Glasscock said.
"At this time a year ago we had to borrow $1.5 million from the Road and Bridge Fund to balance the budget. This year we borrowed zero from that fund and we're keeping expenses under revenue growth.
"I commend all of the elected officials and department heads for working diligently to make this happen," he added. "Also, I want to thank Carol Long, deputy administrator, for the important role she plays in the budget process. Thanks to her help, we were able to conduct budget reviews with the various departments in three days instead of having to drag it out over several weeks."
