Frontier Days celebrate a simpler time

Eva Art Guild has completed plans for its 18th annual Eva Frontier Days beginning Saturday, Sept. 22, and continuing through Saturday, Sept. 29.
"A lot of time and effort has gone into making plans for Eva Frontier Days in 2007 and we feel good about our lineup of fun-filled activities," said Barbara Frost, secretary of the Art Guild. "We cordially invite our friends and neighbors to pay us a visit during this special event. We have plenty of room for everyone."
A beauty pageant will kick off the festivities on April 22 at 10 a.m. It will be staged in the Eva School gymnasium and feature competition in nine age divisions. Winners will be chosen by non-local judges and will receive trophies. They also will be invited to ride in the town's gala street parade on the following Saturday.
The entry fee is $35 and the deadline for entry is Sept. 14. Proceeds will benefit the Art Guild. For more information, call April Shadden at 796-0092 or 796-5686.
At 6 p.m. the same day a Bluegrass Music Festival will be staged at the same location. It will feature Stan Nelson and the Hurricane Creek Band. As a part of the festival local singers and musicians will be invited to enter a Frontier Days Idol Contest. The top three entries will be recognized and receive prizes. Admission will be $6 per person and proceeds will benefit the Art Guild.
A community hayride-the most popular weekday event-will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Riders will board hay-filled trailers pulled by tractors and trucks and spend 45 minutes to an hour riding the back roads in the community. Last year 35 vehicles were used and about 800 people participated.
A community singing will be a featured activity on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.
The event will be climaxed on Saturday, Sept. 29, with a wide variety of activities, including a street parade, antique tractor and car show, arts and crafts exhibits and live entertainment. Other activities on the schedule are a baking contest, Bar-B-Q cook-off, Best Dress Contest, Pig Calling Contest, Greased Pig chase and Frog Jumping Contest.
The street parade will be featured at 11 a.m. It will stretch for more than a mile and will include antique tractors and cars, amateur floats, marching bands, fire engines and other rapid responder vehicles and wagons and buggies pulled by mules and horses.
