BBB warns of Social Security scam
By Staff
The Better Business Bureau of North Alabama and the U.S. Social Security Administration are issuing a warning to local residents concerning scams involving imposters of Social Security Administration employees. The BBB reports several people have received visits from people claiming to be administration employees.
The imposters tried to obtain personal information such as Social Security or bank account numbers.
Another report was phony administration employees told people their Social Security payments were about to increase and that their social security number and bank account number were required for the larger deposit.
BBB is advising residents against distributing personal information, including bank account information or social security numbers.
If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from the Social Security Administration, call 1-800-772-1213 for verification.
