Seventh grade social studies students at Danville Middle School have launched a letter writing campaign to keep secondhand tobacco smoke away from non-smokers, especially young children, and they have focused their efforts on Morgan County’s parks and recreational facilities.
Teacher Dawn Davis said she asked her 95 students to do something that would make a mark for the betterment of their community.
Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke is especially dangerous for young children, Amber Wynn said.
Commission Chairman John Glasscock said the county’s parks are not designated by policy as being smoke-free; however, he said smokers are urged to use restraint when lighting up.
District I Commissioner Jeff Clark said NorthPark at Priceville addressed the problem of secondhand smoke by designating a smoking area near the parking lot entrance.
