Lady Tigers win Hartselle tournament

Segars pitches back-to-back wins; Orr rips two homers

Hartselle’s Lady Tigers (24-5) combined solid defense with tough pitching and came up with some timely hits as they swept six games and captured championship honors in their own invitational tournament at the Grady and Margie Long Park Friday and Saturday.
Breanna Segars gave a command performance on the mound as she hurled three shutout wins, including the semifinal and final games. Kayla Orr slugged a pair of home runs to give her team a big lift at the plate.
Hartselle 3
Gardendale 0
In the championship game, the Lady Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out single by Chandler Orr after Haley Miller and Kayla Orr each singled. C. Orr knocked in another run in the top of the fifth after Kristy Pevahouse reached base on an error, Katie Keel laid down a sacrifice bunt and K. Orr walked. The final run was scored after a catch was made on Whitley Collins’ long fly ball to center field.
C. Orr collected three singles in four times at bat, K. Orr and Keel each had a pair of singles and Miller had a single.
Segars was the winning pitcher. She allowed no runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one.
Hartselle 2
Buckhorn 0
K. Orr blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to give the Lady Tigers all the runs they needed to get by Buckhorn 2-0 in a semifinal contest. Keel and Segars each had a single.
Segars was the winning pitcher. She allowed no runs on four hits, struck out four and gave up two walks. She faced her toughest challenge in the top of the third inning after two batters singled and a walk loaded the bases. She struck out the next batter to get out of the inning.
Hartselle 2
Haleyville 1
The Lady Tigers edged Haleyville 2-1 in the opening game of the double elimination tournament on the strength of a solo home run by K. Orr in the top of the sixth inning. They scored a go-ahead run in the top of the first on a sacrifice ground ball by Collins. Haleyville tied the score on the strength of three singles in the bottom of the first.
Michel Fields was credited with the win. She worked six innings, allowing one run on six hits. She posted three strikeouts and gave up a walk.
The Lady Tigers drew a top seed in the tournament by winning three straight games in pool play. The results of those games are as follows:
Hartselle 4
Lawrence County 1
The Lady Tigers opened pool play on Friday by defeating Lawrence County 4-1 behind the hitting of C. Orr and Kristy Pevahouse. Orr had a home run and a single and Pevahouse had a pair of doubles and a single.
Segars was the winning pitcher. She allowed one run on five hits while striking out five batters.
Hartselle 10
Walker 2
Audrey McClanahan played a key role in leading the Lady Tigers to a 10-2 win over Walker County in the second game of pool play. She allowed two runs on five hits in recording the pitching win and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, double and single and five RBIs.
Pevahouse and Anna Hall each had a double and a single and a RBI.
Hartselle 10
Hazel Green
The Lady Tigers blanked Hazel Green 3-0 in the third game of pool plays on Saturday. K. Orr had a double and a single and knocked in a run and scored twice. Collins was 2-for-4 with a run scored a RBI and a double and C. Orr had a double, a RBI and scored a run.
Segars was the winning pitcher. She allowed no runs while giving up two hits and striking out four in six innings of work.
