For the first time since Greg Cain resigned his position, Hartselle’s School Board has a full slate of members.
Hartselle’s City Council appointed Robert Rollins to serve on the school board. Rollins replaces Cain, who was elected Morgan County’s probate judge.
Rollins was one of three finalists for the school board post. The council also considered former board member Dr. James Joy and Nicole Mashburn.
Rollins’ appointment wasn’t unanimous. Councilman Bill Drake voted against the appointment; Councilman Mark Mizell abstained from the vote. Mizell, who owns a sporting goods company that does work with the school system, said he’s waiting for an opinion from the Attorney General’s office on whether he can vote on school board issues.
Rollins is an employee with AT&T. The council opted to appoint Rollins, in part, because some said they wanted a more diverse background on the board. The five-member board currently is made up of one doctor and one hospital public relations director. Another member is married to a local dentist.
Some council members expressed reservations about appointing Dr. Joy, a dentist, or Mashburn, who holds a doctorate, and is married to a doctor.
In other city council news:
The council will consider rezoning some .40 acres on Highway 31 at its Feb. 27 meeting. The site, located next to Citizens Bank, is the proposed site for a Guthrie’s Restaurant. The proposal calls for the site to be rezoned from residential to business.
The city is accepting applications for two positions on the Emergency Medical Service Board. The appointment is for four years. One of the appointees must be a physician. The city is also accepting applications for a five-year term on the Park and Recreation Board. Applications are accepted online at www.hartselle.org or they can be picked up at city hall. The deadline for applications is March 2 at 4 p.m.
The council changed the date of its second April meeting to April 17 at 7 p.m.
