Blue Devils open area slate with win over Hatton

Falkville’s Blue Devils scored nine unanswered points in the final three minutes of the game to defeat a scrappy Hatton Hornets team 60-51 in their home opener at Drake Gymnasium Dec. 1. The win lifted the Blue Devils to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in their area. Hatton fell to 0-5.
The Blue Devils led 12-8 after the first period, 34-25 at halftime and 45-36 after three periods but had to call on two of their seniors, Heath Alford and Adam Dye, for some last minute heroics before they could pull the game out of the fire.
After the Hornets knotted the score at 51-all with three minutes to play, Alford scored back-to-back baskets and a free throw and pulled down two defensive rebounds. Dye had a put-back basket on a missed free throw and added two clutch free throws with 30 seconds left in the game.
Alford paced the Blue Devils with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Dye added 12 points and Nathan Riggins and Thomas Holt each had seven points.
Hatton girls 50, Falkville girls 26
Falkville‘s Lady Blue Devils remained winless after four games after losing a 50-26 decision to Hatton’s Lady Hornets in an area game played at Drake Gymnasium on December 1. The winners improved to 2-3 and 1-0 on the season.
Falkville trailed 15-11 after one period, 27-16 at the half and 41-21 after the third quarter.
Katie Annerton led Falkville in scoring with 11 points. Tara Tucker had seven points.
Paige Rutherford paced the winners with 18 points.
Hartselle boys 50, Athens boys 43
The Tigers made it 2-0 against Athens this season and improved their overall record to 5-4 with the home win Thursday evening.
Hartselle trailed by two points at the halftime break before rallying. Alex Brown had 15 points for the Tigers, followed by Victor Stansberry with 12 and Jackson Holmes with 11. Holmes also led the team with eight rebounds.
Hartselle girls 41, Athens girls 38
Jessica Andrews’ 13 points and four assists helped pace Hartselle to its second win over Athens this season. Lauren Drake had 10 points and six rebounds for the Lady Tigers, who improved to 6-2.
Mary Virginia Reeves had eight points and nine rebounds and Jessi Smith was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help Hartselle hang on for the victory.
Keona Shoulders had 15 points for Athens.

West Morgan boys 46, Hartselle boys 44
The Tigers were 0-for-4 from the three-point line in the fourth quarter, including a missed three-pointer with two seconds left, as Hartselle fell in a tough home loss to West Morgan Nov. 28.
Hartselle led 24-20 at halftime and trailed 39-38 heading into the fourth quarter but could not make enough shots down the stretch. Hartselle’s Jackson Holmes scored on a lay-up with 16 seconds left to make the score 46-44 and West Morgan’s Brandon Jackson missed a free throw to give the Tigers the ball back.
Hartselle got off a three-pointer, but it bounced off the back rim and the Rebels secured the rebound to pull off the win.
Holmes led the Tigers with 12 points, followed by Alex Brown with 11. Phillip Powell scored 21 for the victorious Rebels.
Hartselle girls 74, West Morgan girls 23
The Lady Tigers led by 26 points at halftime and cruised from there in an easy win over the Lady Rebels Nov. 28 at the Pettey Center.
Lauren Drake had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Tigers, followed by Jessi Smith with 15. Jessica Andrews added 12 points and seven assists and Emily Roden had nine points and five assists.
Kelly Seal led the Lady Rebels with eight points.
Brewer boys 66, West Point boys 49
The Patriots picked up a win at home Nov. 28 against Area 13 foe West Point.
Darrius Campbell had 14 points to lead Brewer, followed by a threesome of 10-point scorers in Rusty Boyd, Rodney Childs and Alex Brown.
Brewer girls 76, West Point girls 36
Five players scored in double digits for the Lady Patriots in their area opener.
Morgan Crawley led Brewer with 14 points; Courtney Scott added 13; and Genie Browning, Meagan Hormel and Andrew Crawford each had 10.
Michelle Tillman led the team with 10 points. Browning finished with seven assists and Crawford had seven steals.
Priceville boys 56, Falkville boys 47
In a Morgan County battle, Priceville’s Josh Bedwell had 22 points and eight rebounds as the Bulldogs moved past Falkville. Andrew Johnson added 12 points and five boards for Priceville.
For Falkville, Joseph Lacy led the way with 15 points and Heath Alford added 10.
Priceville girls 64, Falkville girls 38
Priceville outscored the Lady Blue Devils by 20 points in the second half on the way to a convincing victory over its Morgan County rival.
Marissa Chambers had 14 points for Priceville and Abbie Harris added 13 points and six rebounds. Adrianna Delatorre scored 10 points and Allison White led the Lady Bulldogs with nine rebounds.
Good Hope girls 56, Danville girls 44
Magen Linderman had 12 points and six rebounds but the Lady Hawks fell in their area opener Nov. 28. Lauren Simmons added 10 points and six boards for Danville. Kristen Sparkman also pulled down six rebounds.
