Some Hartselle School Board members are voicing opposition to a new state law that requires all high school students to take a “Life Course” prior to their junior year.
Board Member Jeff Gray said some freshmen face going to summer school to take the course because they weren’t able to schedule it in the regular school term.
Dr. Mike Reed said the course is the result of a new law passed by the state legislature.
The subject matter of the course involves physical education, diet and family living.
Board member Kathy Goodwin said she believes the course should be required because it is about educating kids on the importance of a balanced diet and exercise.
The board approved the first reading of policy changes, including the one that will make the “Life Course” compulsory for freshmen.
