Danville-Neel Elementary School fourth graders recently sponsored a two-day collection drive for victims of Hurricane Katrina and filled a utility trailer with a variety of needed items.
Students school-wide donated clothes, baby items, non-perishable food, hygiene products, paper goods, pet food, cleaning supplies, bottled water, toys and a variety of school supplies for residents of Wool Market, Miss.
"My daughter's college roommate is from Wool Market," Danville-Neel fourth grade teacher Jennifer Whitley explained. "All of this will go to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, which was destroyed. It was founded in 1846 and Jefferson Davis was a founding member, so we got to discuss some Alabama history with the kids, too. "
Whitley drove the donation to Mississippi Sept. 10 and the items were distributed to the community by the church Sept. 11.
"The students here at Danville-Neel are such sweet babies," Whitley said. "They're as good as gold to want to help."
