Hartselle High School honored its spring sport athletes Monday night as the occasion was highlighted by the announcement of a new state record for the Tiger baseball team.
Hartselle High assistant coach Chris Heaps informed the crowd the 2005 edition of the Tiger baseball team had set a record for the most hits in a season with 520 base hits. The old record was set in 2003 by Cullman with 496 hits.
The Outstanding Achievement Award in baseball went to junior third baseman Jordan Parker, who came within one hit of tying the state record for hits in a season. Parker recorded 74 hits, breaking the school record by nine.
The Leadoff Award went to Hunter Brasher, who drew 46 walks and collected 14 doubles this season. The Low ERA Award went to senior Chris Russell for his 1.86 ERA. The Base Stealer Award went to Justin Youngblood, who swiped 23 bases in 24 attempts this season. The Batting Champ Award went to Joe McClanahan, who compiled a .447 average. The Hustle Award went to Chris Wiley, who also received a .400 Hitter award, along with teammates Ja'Cote Ward, Parker and McClanahan. The Most Valuable Pitcher Award went to Andrew Reeves, while the Defensive MVP award went to catcher Wiley. The Power Hitters Award was shared by Wiley and sophomore Justin Hargett. The Offensive MVP Award went to Parker, while the Best All-Round Defensive Player went to Daxton Maze. Most Improved was won by Kris Berry, while the Comeback Player Award went to Chase Lusk.
The Academic Award went to Alex Thompson with a 4.14 GPA. The Team Captain Awards went to Wiley, Michael Scott, Zach Smith, Seth Watson and Reeves.
The Team Player award was won by senior Josh Walters.
Softball coach Shane Alexander announced the following awards for his team. Most Outstanding Defensive Player was Jessica Barbrey, while she also won the Hustle Award. Most Outstanding Offensive Player went to power-hitting sophomore Kayla Orr, who led the team in homers, batting average, triples and RBIs.
Most Outstanding Pitcher went to sophomore Mary Curtis. The Academic Award went to Sarah Whitlow with a 4.17 GPA. Whitlow, Barbrey and Elizabeth Stejskal received the Team Captain Award.
Coach Darrell Harris announced the boy's soccer awards. The Best Offensive Player Award went to Ian Greenhaw, while the Outstanding Midfielder Award went to Aaron Burleson. The Academic Award was shared among four players with 4.0 GPAs, they are Corey Holt, Patrick Whatley, Eric Gilbert and Grant Bergstue.
The MVP Award went to Gilbert and Burleson, while the Best Utility Player went to Paul Sparkman. The Best Team Player Award went to Wes Grove, while Most Improved Player went to Bergstue. Best Defensive Player Award went to Nathan Payne and Gilbert, while Whatley won the Team Captain Award.
Girl's soccer coach Jenny McFee announced the following awards. Offensive MVP went to Madison Lipsey, who scored 22 goals in 16 games, while Defensive MVP went to goalie Jamie Smyth, who made 232 saves. Most Improved Player went to Alex Hines, while the Team Spirit Award went to Briley Sandlin. The Versatility Award was won by Jessica Owens and Rachel Walker. The Coaches MVP Award went to Ashley "Smash" Self, who scored 19 goals this season. The Academic Award went to Kathy Canafax, while Lipsey took the Team Captain Award.
Coach Steve Knight announced the Track and Field awards. He awarded the Academic Award to Brad Eubanks, who posted a 3.97 GPA, while Jeff Whitt was named MVP.
Regina Hudson announced the tennis awards.
The Hustle Award went to Anthony Penny, while Leah Ferguson won the Senior Award. The Leadership Awards went to Sadie McElvy and Keeton Light.
Robert Morrow announced the girl's golf awards. The Low Medalist Award went to Taylor Kirby, while the Academic Award went to Meghan Bouderaux with a 4.0 GPA. The Team Captain Awards went to Meagan Gillott and Kirby.
Chad Gladden announced the boy's golf awards. The Academic Award went to Tyler Kirby with a 3.96 GPA, while he also won the Low Medalist Award. The Team Captain Awards went to Kirby and Tyler Berry.
