Morgan County Humane Society is now fully accredited and up and running but still needs members and a site for an animal shelter, according to Robyn Purdy, executive director.
"We've been operating out of my home since last December and we've made some progress," Purdy said. "We've been able to find good homes for several homeless pets, become fully certified as animal handlers and received encouragement from a number of different sources. However, two of our most important needs haven't been met. We still need members and we've launched a campaign to try to meet that need. We also are still looking for somebody who is willing to give us a parcel of land on which to build an animal shelter."
"We're very limited without a shelter," Purdy said. "If we had a piece of land with an old building on it, that would be great. We could fix it up and use it as a temporary shelter until we can afford a new one. Or, if we had a building site, we would be able to get a grant to help fund a new facility. We're got people waiting to volunteer to help with the construction work."
Purdy said she and another director recently attended an animal care exposition in Atlanta and the Alabama Animal Control Conference in Decatur. "We received a lot of new information about animal care and received certificates from both meetings. We are now certified on the same level as animal control officers who work for the city of Decatur and Morgan County Commission," she pointed out.
She said the Society welcomes tax-deductible cash donations in any amount and also is in need of both cat and dog carriers and used towels and blankets.
