Funeral for Sherman Davis Echols, 80, was Friday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Hartselle with the Rev. Brooks Barkley and Dr. Jeff Redmond officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Burial was in Center Springs Cemetery.
Mr. Echols died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at his residence. He was born Dec. 4, 1923, in Somerville to Forest and Crucie Echols. He graduated from Priceville High School, then began serving his country in the Army Air Corps. His duty took him to Guam during World War II.
Following military service, he graduated from Jacksonville State University in 1950. He taught and coached basketball and baseball at Cotaco High School for two years. He worked at Rohm and Haas Co. for five years. He worked for NASA for 27 years as an engineering technician. He retired in 1984 from NASA.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hartselle where he was a former deacon, RA leader, church training director and Sunday school teacher. He was a member and past president of the Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Blanche Stone Echols; two daughters, Sherry Echols of Hartselle and Dr. Jennie Echols of Baton Rouge, La; a son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Lisa Echols of Peachtree City, Ga.; one granddaughter, Jessica Echols; and one grandson, Wesley Echols; and a niece, Flora Cooper of Decatur.
Pallbearers were Bill Starkey, John Montgomery, Karl Prince, Frank Ellis, Mack Taylor, Norman Lockhart, Homer Landrum and Bill Hart.
