Tankersley benefits from raise

By Staff
Staff Reports, Hartselle Enquirer
New Mayor Dwight Tankersley will make more money than out-going mayor Clif Knight, thanks in part to a vote Knight made earlier this year.
Hartselle's new mayor will earn $24,000 a year, up from the current salary of $12,000. The mayor will also be able to participate in the city's health insurance program.
Earlier this year, Knight voted in favor of the increase. Alabama law prohibits officials from raising their own salaries, but can increase salaries for future office-holders.
Knight and Councilmembers Frank Jones, Tom Chappell, Alvin Abercrombie and Don Hall were defeated last week by challengers. Only council member Dick Carter survived for a runoff.
The new council members – Kenny Thompson, Bill Smelser, Mark Mizell, Samie Wiley and, if he wins the runoff against Carter, Bill Drake – will also see a pay increase. Council members will earn $500 per month, with the council president earning $7,500 a year.
