Campaigning for city elective offices is intensifying preparatory to the August elections.
1886 -July 22, The elections in the average small Alabama town create more interest frequently than the great contests in state and nation. The races are generally free for alls, and the entries numerous. So deceitful are the dear people, that Mr. Candidate is led to believe he's the best man in town by several hundred majority. This makes him very polite and affable-at least until after the election rolls around.
1984 -July 22, Mayor Don Brown, the incumbent, and John D. Long, the former city chief executive, are accelerating their campaigns as election day approaches. These two were selected for run-off slots in the initial July 10 balloting.
1972 -July 23, John D. Long is facing stiff competition from Bill Gardner and Bruce Johnson to keep his position as Hartselle's chief executive. Voters will have their say when they go to the polls on August 8.
1968 -July 24, Former Mayor Grady Long would like to return to his old job. However, if John D. Long and Melvin Black have their way this won't happen.
1960 -July 25, A. A. Oden, Hartselle accountant, plans to qualify soon to run for a position on the city council. The Oden family have participated in Hartselle civic affairs since its founding.

1944 -July 27, Ben F. Bean and G. P. Frost both announced their candidacies for membership on the Hartselle board of aldermen today.
1976 -July 27, The Hartselle city council has empowered Mayor John D. Long to enter an agreement with Joe Wheeler Electric to put in street lights in the Mason Acres subdivision.
1980 -July 28, Paul Weinman and Down Brown are vying to become Hartselle's first full-time mayor. Who will get to fulfill his aspirations depends on the outcome of tomorrow's runoff. Kenneth Thompson faces incumbent Mayor John D. Long in the race for place three on the city council.
